Mouse Evolutionary Genetics MeetingJune 18-19, 2009
The William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education Conference CenterThe Center for Genome Dynamics sponsored: “The house mouse: a model for evolutionary genetics and the study of complex traits”. The central theme of this invitation only meeting was the development of the house mouse as a model for evolutionary genetics, including the study of complex traits, phenotypic evolution, and genetic variation.

NIH Site VisitMarch 26, 2009The Center hosted an NIGMS Site Visit which included presentations by Center Project Leaders and staff.

Lamoine Consolidated School VisitJanuary 29, 200Staff and students from Lamoine Consolidated School in Lamoine, ME visited the Center during a visit to The Jackson Laboratory.

The visit was organized by Center Scientific Software Engineer Lucie Hutchins who participates in a women's volunteer group in Lamoine. The goal of the volunteer group is to promote math and science in the early stages of education. 26 students from 7th and 8th grades took part in the visit with several staff members from the school including the principal and two teachers. The aim of the tour was to answer students questions such as: What is a lab? What kind of work is performed in a lab? How many projects are being worked on at any one time? What are the various jobs or positions that are available at a lab and what are the skill set requirements to be hired by a lab?

Schedule:
9:00 Arrival
9:05 Mouse Models and the Summer Student Program - Kristin Cough (Veterinary Services) and Jon Geiger (Director Educational Programs)
9:55 Demonstration on cheek cell DNA precipitation - Jenn Bridgers (Community Relations Representative)
10:30 The genetics of horns and fire breathing in dragons - Randy Von Smith (Center Research Program Manager)
11:15 Lunch
12:00 Departure

Short Course on Systems Genetics September 23 - 29, 2008

This one-week course covers computational and experimental approaches to genetic studies that utilize whole genome approaches. Lectures and computer workshops are designed to accommodate students with a wide variety of backgrounds. Biologists seeking to gain a deeper understanding of statistical and computational methods as well as quantitative scientists desiring exposure to biological problems are welcome. Topics to be covered include genetic mapping, gene expression microarray analysis and computational modeling of complex systems.
