The Short Course on Systems Genetics addressed the need for a growing interdisciplinary workforce in biomedical research by training biologists and quantitative scientists in the statistical and computational methods of genetic data analysis. Participants (1) developed an understanding of genetic and statistical principles relevant to the analysis of complex phenotypes and disease; (2) critically evaluated quantitative data from large-scale genetic and molecular biological studies; (3) developed appropriate study designs using contemporary molecular and statistical genetic approaches; and (4) developed professional relationships to promote interdisciplinary research efforts. The overall goal of the course was to train new scientists and re-train established investigators in the use of mathematical tools for the analysis of complex phenotypes and systems.
